New vending machines installed across campus

New, state-of-the-art vending machines have been installed at locations across main campus. Offering better quality, more varied and healthier food and drink options, the new machines will also be more energy efficient.

During December and January, all 60 of the existing vending machines were removed and replaced with 30 new models at locations that were chosen based on consultation with stakeholders and analysis of usage rates. Going forward, additional vending machines will be introduced as an integral part of future capital investment and refurbishment projects.

An extensive consultation process

The new contract for the provision of vending services was awarded to Broderick's, a leading North-West supplier, following an extensive consultation process. This involved engagement with representatives from Schools, Departments and key buildings on main campus to fully understand the needs of staff and students and to agree where machines are no longer required or could be relocated.

The Sustainability Team was also closely involved in the contract tendering process to help ensure that the new supplier can provide assurances relating to energy efficiency, carbon emissions and stock management.

Reduced environmental impact

Energy consumption on vending services will halve with the introduction of the new machines. In addition, ‘reverse vending’ will be possible, whereby customers are rewarded for recycling empty bottles and cans.

The new supplier has outstanding environmental credentials. Broderick’s has attained ISO 14001 certification every year since 1998, and has an ongoing commitment to continually monitor and improve its environmental performance.
