The Confucius Institute at the University of Liverpool will run a number of cultural courses, including Chinese Calligraphy and Painting classes from March 2021.
Chinese calligraphy (书 shu) and Chinese traditional painting (画 hua) along with playing Guqin (琴 qin) - an ancient stringed musical instrument - and playing Chinese chess (棋 qi) are considered the four arts of a Chinese scholar in throughout history. There is a Chinese idiom says that the painting defines man and a man is defined by his (calligraphy) style. It indicates how important calligraphy and painting style for cultivating the character of an educated man.
These courses will help you appreciate the ancient and still popular modern art forms of the Chinese language, while also guiding you as you explore Chinese culture as represented by and reflected in Chinese calligraphy and painting.

Chinese Painting Beginner Class (Online)
Students can appreciate and analyse traditional Chinese painting art works in the comprehensive 10-week course and gain hands-on experience of drawing traditional Chinese painting.

Miss Ruolin Zhen
Ruolin Zhen graduated from MA Art Museum and Gallery Studies (2018-2019) with merit, University of Leicester, Leicester, the United Kingdom. She was a member of installation team of “One Second Feature” - Anna Lucas Exhibition in February of 2019. She worked as an intern of work placement with conservation team in People’s History Museum, Manchester, the United Kingdom, from July of 2019 to September of 2019. For undergraduate studies (2013-2017), Ruolin studied in Chinese Traditional Painting Studies, Capital Normal University, Beijing, China. In 2015 - 2016, she was awarded the Third - Class Scholarship of Capital Normal University. In 2016, she was awarded the First Prize in Chinese Traditional Calligraphy Competition of Capital Normal University. Ruolin’s graduation art work “The Late Arhat of Shaolin Temple - series 2” was selected as the outstanding graduation art works of 2017 academy of School of Fine Arts of Capital Normal University, and was displayed on the Main Building Exhibition Hall of Capital Normal University from June 2017 to July 2017.
Ruolin has practised Chinese calligraphy for fifteen years and mastered structure and brushwork of regular script, seal script, clerical script and running script, especially skilled in regular script includes regular script in small Chinese characters, she has four years’ experience of drawing traditional Chinese realistic painting and traditional Chinese freehand.
