As 2020 has seen covid-19 impact every corner of the globe, the debate around who is winning the battle against coronavirus has been a constant feature in the world’s media. So too has the debate on whether gender has had a role to play in the successful leadership of countries during the pandemic.
Female national leaders locked down earlier and suffered half as many covid-19 deaths on average as male leaders, according to analysis across 194 countries by the Management School’s Professor Supriya Garikipati. Professor Garikipati said: “The results clearly indicate that women leaders reacted more quickly and decisively in the face of potential fatalities. In almost all cases, they locked down earlier than male leaders in similar circumstances. While this may have longer-term economic implications, it has certainly helped these countries to save lives, as evidenced by the significantly lower number of deaths in these countries.”
To coincide with the Management School’s recent Bronze Athena Swan award and the relaunch of the Women’s Leadership Professional Interest Network, Professor Garikipati will be leading a panel discussion on the topic of female leadership and will ask the question ‘Women’s Leadership, Better or Just Different?’. Professor Garikipati will be joined by a panel of experts to discuss her research and whether gender does have an impact on the successful leadership of a nation.
Our panellists: Professor Supriya Garikipati – Associate Professor in Developmental Economist and research author; Professor Liz Parsons Professor of Marketing and Athena Swan lead for the Management School (Panel Chair); Paul Amann – Principle Officer Employment and Skills at Liverpool City Region Combined Authority; Francesca Rhodes – Senior Advocacy and Policy Adviser at CARE International UK; Stephanie Fillion – Journalist and contributor to Forbes Women.
