The University of Liverpool is at the forefront of research exploring the political and legal questions surrounding novel forms of labour exploitation, and recent years have seen the international community pay increasing attention to the development of new forms of unfree labour.

The Eradicating Modern Slavery Debate event marks the appointment of the UK’s independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner Dame Sara Thornton as Honorary Professor in Modern Slavery at the University. This appointment will create more opportunities to bring together academics and practitioners at the Centre for the Study of International Slavery and the city’s International Slavery Museum to explore new ways to bridge the gap between heritage and knowledge, and policy and practice on contemporary slavery, in particular to inform new government policy.
