Join us for an evening of readings by poets Chen Chen, Jay G Ying and Mary Jean Chan and discussion, hosted by Dr Lucienne Loh.
Chen Chen is the author of When I Grow Up I Want to Be a List of Further Possibilities (BOA Editions, 2017), which was longlisted for the National Book Award for Poetry and won the Thom Gunn Award for Gay Poetry, among other honours. Bloodaxe Books has recently published the UK edition. Chen’s work appears in many publications, including POETRY, The New York Times Magazine, The Best American Poetry, and The Best American Nonrequired Reading. He has received a Pushcart Prize and fellowships from Kundiman and the National Endowment for the Arts. He holds an MFA from Syracuse University and a PhD from Texas Tech University. Currently he teaches at Brandeis University as the Jacob Ziskind Poet-in-Residence.
Jay G Ying is a poet, fiction writer, critic and translator based in Edinburgh. His writing has appeared in or is forthcoming from The White Review, The Poetry Review, Modern Poetry in Translation, Granta among others. He is a winner of a New Poets Prize. His debut pamphlet Wedding Beasts was published from Bitter Melon in 2019 and his second pamphlet Katabasis is forthcoming in 2020.
Mary Jean Chan (b. 1990) is a poet, editor and lecturer from Hong Kong. She is the author of Flèche (Faber & Faber, 2019), which was selected as a 2019 Poetry Book Society Autumn Recommendation. The collection's title poem, 'Flèche', won the Poetry Society's 2018 Geoffrey Dearmer Prize. In 2018, her debut pamphlet A Hurry of English (ignitionpress, 2018) was chosen as the Poetry Book Society Summer Pamphlet Choice. In 2017, Mary Jean was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem, and is currently shortlisted for the 2019 Forward Prizes in the same category. She is the recipient of a 2019 Eric Gregory Award, and won second prize in the 2017 National Poetry Competition. As a Ledbury Poetry Critic, Mary Jean has been a reviewer for The Guardian, and her critical work has appeared in The Journal of American Studies, Wild Court and Modern Poetry in Translation. An editor of Oxford Poetry, advisory board member at the Poetry Translation Centre and member of the Folio Prize Academy, Mary Jean is Lecturer in Creative Writing (Poetry) at Oxford Brookes University and lives in London.
