The Fröhlich Lectures are presentations by research leaders which are intended to be accessible to a general audience at the advanced undergraduate level.
Fifty years ago at Stanford, the cross section was measured in a new energy range of inelastic electron-proton scattering. This was interpreted by Feynman and others as the discovery of parton substructure of the proton. The lecture describes the time around 1969 and how the physics of quark dynamics evolved into modern times, with crucial experiments and theoretical developments. Finally, an outlook is given on the future physics with quarks and the gluons that are binding them.
