John Kenyon Davies, FBA, Emeritus Rathbone Professor of Ancient History and Classical Archaeology, is in the global premier league of working ancient historians. The book of his doctoral thesis, Athenian Propertied Families, 600-300 BC, Oxford 1971, is still a classic piece of key research that has yet to be surpassed. John has made a huge contribution to the University of Liverpool, and to the study of ancient history.

This event will celebrate his work and launch a book in his honour, with an invited lecture by Nino Luraghi, (Wykeham Professor of Ancient History, Oxford) entitled: "The Peloponnesian Peace: Thucydides and the ideology of the Peace of Nikias". John will also respond with some thoughts on current trends in historical thinking.

Liverpool and Manchester friends and colleagues, visitors from further afield, students and postgraduates are invited to share John’s career and his innovative thinking about ancient history.

If you have any questions about this event, please contact Zosia Archibald: zszymi@liverpool.ac.uk

The lecture will finish at approximately 6pm and be followed by a drinks reception. There will also be a book display from the Classical Press of Wales.
