Brexit and the DUP with Prof Jon Tonge

This paper examines the Euro-scepticism of the Democratic Unionist Party. It assesses how its basis has changed from religion – suspicion of the European Economic Community as a ‘Catholic club’ to politics – the importance of UK sovereignty which must not be diluted regarding Northern Ireland. The paper assesses what the DUP really wants from Brexit, its attitudes to the ‘backstop’ and the impact of its Euroscepticism upon relationships with the Conservative government.
