This paper explores how the different historiographical styles of Herodotus and Thucydides come together in Procopius’ Wars. Through discussion of selected concepts and passages, and also examination of the ways in which pagan concepts and models are intertwined with Christian ideas, I will argue that the combination of disparate elements makes Procopius’ work unique and reveals his narrative artfulness, complicates his historical methodology as well as his theological and historical thinking, and sheds light on the relationship between Herodotus and Thucydides.
