Early Village Societies Seminar
Walbank Seminar Room, 12 Abercromby Square

Professor Peter Akkermans (Leiden University, The Netherlands) will talk about his current research in Jordan’s north-eastern basalt desert: the Jebel Qurma Archaeological Landscape Project. This lecture will synthesise six seasons of survey and excavation in the desert, bringing new datasets from settlements, burials, rock art, and inscriptions into a single interpretative framework. The lifeways of the inhabitants of the “periphery” of the kingdoms and empires of the ancient Levant will be brought into focus, casting new light on the cultural significance of the desert and its ancient peoples from ca. 1000 BC to 500 AD.
