At almost 70 years old, the NHS is a cherished part of public life. Relatively simple in design on its inception, it is now a complex landscape of public and private providers, “consumer”-incentives, funding austerity, regulatory agencies, non-statutory bodies, and growing concern for patient safety. This one-day symposium explores the current challenges facing the NHS including: the role of competition, accountability, the cost of ‘lifestyle’ diseases and the capacity of public regulatory arrangements to ensure that services benefit patients.
