David is a Consultant Vitreo-retinal surgeon at Sunderland Eye Infirmary as well as Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Genetic Medicine at Newcastle University. He is a founding member of the Newcastle retinal stem cell group (http://www.retinalstemcellresearch.co.uk) and has interests in the derivation of RPE and photoreceptor cells from induced pluripotent stem cells both for transplantation, and disease modelling. He will discuss some of the current approaches and challenges facing researchers attempting retinal regeneration using cellular therapies including RPE transplantation and the potential role of 3D retinal organoids.
