“Tragic history” has long been a term of abuse, used of the kind of ancient history writing thought to be sub-standard compared with Thucydides and Polybius. This paper attempts to show that Hellenistic “tragic historiography” not only had Classical underpinnings, but may also have had a theoretical foundation and a purpose not so far removed from the purposes of some 21st-century historians.

Speaker: Dr Lisa Hau (University of Glasgow)
