The use of certain polychrome marbles (pavonazzetto, giallo antico, porphyry, etc.) is seen by most scholars as the (sole) preserve of the emperor, with quarries being opened and run by imperial officials in order to supply imperial building projects in the city of Rome and in the key provincial capitals of the empire.

The find of an inscribed pavonazzetto slab in a 2nd century questions the monopoly of imperial demand. In this paper a different explanation is suggested for the distribution of polychrome marble, which is not based on an economic model but takes the military role of the emperor more fully into account

Speaker: Dr Alfred Hirt (University of Liverpool)
