"The Dawn of Gravitational Wave Astronomy."
Professor Alberto Vecchio
Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Birmingham

Abstract:
On September 14, 2015 the two instruments of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) observed a gravitational wave transient that has been associated with the coalescence of a binary black hole. Here I will describe the history of the discovery, the exquisite technology that has enabled this detection and the physical properties that we have inferred about the source. I will also present the results of the analysis of the full data collected during the first observing run of Advanced LIGO and discuss the prospects for the future.
