'Knowledge is Power' tells the story of the rise of libraries in eighteenth-century Liverpool, driven on by the massive expansion of the city based on its port and its ocean-going trade. This introductory talk by Dr Mark Towsey (Department of History, University of Liverpool) explores the role of libraries in this expansion, detailing how books went from being luxury items at the start of the century, barely encountered beyond the circles of privilege and wealth, to being an essential component of everyday life. Libraries played a central role in this Reading Revolution, and the talk will highlight some of the political and social consequences - particularly as they were felt in Liverpool.
