Peter Robinson defends former presidents, generals, and sometimes their lawyers, at international war crimes tribunals. He will speak about the challenges of defending individuals accused of some of the most heinous crimes known to mankind from Rwanda to Bosnia and Sierra Leone. He will also speak about his perspectives on the development of international criminal justice since Nuremberg and what he perceives to be the future prospects and challenges for the ICTY and indeed the ICC. He will conclude by tracing his path from a respected federal prosecutor in the United States to a champion for those demonised by the international community and how Liverpool students can also be a part of the brave new world of international criminal law.
Biography
Peter Robinson is an American lawyer who serves as Legal Advisor to former Bosnian Serb President Radovan Karadzic at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). He was Lead Counsel for former Rwandan National Assembly President Joseph Nzirorera at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda from 2002 until Mr. Nzirorera’s death in July 2010. He also represented Courtney Griffiths, Lead Counsel to Liberian President Charles Taylor in disciplinary proceedings before the Special Court of Sierra Leone.
Prior to beginning work at the international tribunals, Robinson was a federal prosecutor in the United States for 10 years, and then a criminal defence lawyer. Robinson is also the author of a novel, entitled The Tribunal.
