Abstract:
In 1993 Fender’s blue butterfly (Plebejus icarioides fenderi) was a newly rediscovered species in remnant prairies in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Over the next two decades, new populations were found, threats enumerated, Fender’s blue listed as “endangered,” and a proliferation of efforts to recover the butterfly and its habitat across a largely private landscape ensued. As questions emerged, we developed ecological tools to address questions of conservation concern for Fender’s blue and to provide guidance on how to generalize lessons learned across taxa. Lessons from these studies advance ecological knowledge, lead to specific recovery criteria that are being implemented by US Fish and Wildlife Service, and provide guidance to land management agencies on-the-ground.
