When is a material ordered but not periodic? When it’s a quasicrystal! Quasicrystals are alloy materials which are completely ordered without having a repeating pattern and therefore can display symmetries which are forbidden for more conventional materials.
Join us at the next lecture in our popular Science in the Snug series; ‘Quasicrystals: from Fibonacci to the Frying Pan’ where Head of the School of Physical Sciences, Professor Ronan McGrath, will tell the story of quasicrystals; from the pre-medieval history of our ideas about symmetry, to the practical applications of these fascinating materials in areas such as catalysis, coatings and photonics.
