Gerd Kullak-Ublick is a medical doctor and obtained board certification in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at Munich University Hospital Grosshadern, Germany, and at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, where he trained from 1991-2005. In 2001, Gerd obtained an Assistant Professorship funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. From 2006-2025, Gerd was Full Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Zurich.

He also acted as the Global Head of Mechanistic Safety and as Chair of the Hepatic Safety team at Novartis, Basel, from 2009-2025. Gerd’s research interests are centered on the molecular and functional characterization of drug and bile acid transporters, drug-induced liver and kidney injury and the role of nuclear receptors in the regulation of transporters and as drug targets for the treatment of liver and metabolic disease. Gerd was work package leader of the work package “Drug-induced liver injury” in the IMI TransBioLine consortium (evaluation of novel biomarkers in drug-induced liver injury) and is a core member of the Pro-Euro DILI Network, Europe.

Gerd continues working on Drug-Induced Liver injury as Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Liverpool and as Honorary Professor at the University of Malaga, Spain, both these universities having a strong track record in Drug-Induced Liver injury. Gerd was co-founder of TransHeps, a spin-off company of the University of Zurich which focusses on the development of an in vitro DILI causality assay called MetaHeps. Gerd also works closely with biotech companies interested in developing AI-based new approach methodologies (NAMs) for drug safety testing.
