Join us online for an inspiring session with Prof. Chiara Ghidini introducing Process Science as an interdisciplinary field that combines traditional process modelling with AI-driven data analysis to monitor, manage, and optimize real-world operational processes across domains such as administration, industry, and healthcare. Talk will be followed by a panel discussion across a vast range of disciplines to discuss with Chiara how process science can help real case scenarios.

This is a live online webinar hosted by the University of Liverpool, School of Computer Science and Informatics.

The talk will be approximately 25-30 minutes, and will be followed by a Q/A panel session.

Title: Process Science meets AI - how technology can help process management

Abstract:
Processes constitute a fundamental component of numerous activities in modern society. They occur in administrative contexts (e.g., the procedural workflow for applying for and obtaining a passport), industrial production environments (e.g., the manufacturing workflow for assembling a vehicle’s rear door), and healthcare settings (e.g., the clinical treatment pathway for healing a fractured rib). Despite the diversity of these domains, processes share a common structural characteristic: they involve the temporally ordered execution of interrelated tasks designed to achieve a defined objective.

Process Science is an emerging interdisciplinary research field dedicated to the systematic analysis, management, execution, and optimization of operational processes across such domains. In recent years, the field has increasingly integrated traditional model-driven process analysis techniques—such as simulation and established business process management (BPM) methodologies—with data-driven approaches derived from artificial intelligence, including machine learning, reinforcement learning, and data mining.

This talk presents an overview of recent developments in Process Science, including aspects of my own research. Particular emphasis will be placed on practical case studies illustrating how Process Science methodologies can support the effective monitoring, management, and improvement of operational processes in real-world settings.

Short Bio: Prof. Chiara Ghidini is a full professor of Computer Science at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. Her scientific work in the areas of Semantic Web, Knowledge Engineering and Representation, Multi-Agent Systems and Process Mining is internationally well known and recognised, and she has made significant scientific contributions in the areas of: formal semantics for contextual reasoning and multi-context logics; formal frameworks for the specification of deliberative resource bounded agents; ontology mappings and integration; collaborative modeling platforms, business process modelling, and predictive business process monitoring. She has been involved in a number of international research projects, among which the FP7 Organic.Lingua and SO-PC-Pro European projects and the current network of Excellence Humane-AINet, as well as industrial projects in collaboration with companies in the Trentino area. She is vice president of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AIxIA)
