In this lecture, Professor Pope will tell the story of the "Killer in the Kitchen": household air pollution arising from reliance on solid fuels for cooking by 3 billion people. Each year cooking smoke kills more people globally than HIV/ Aids, malaria and TB - in sub-Saharan Africa alone 742,000 lives are lost annually from exposure to particles included in this smoke. Household air pollution is now recognised as a global public health priority and reliance on polluting solid fuels has become a key focus for international health and climate policy and investment to promote transition to clean modern energy. Prof Pope will discuss how 20 years of Global Public Health Research conducted by the University of Liverpool (from the Guatemalan Highlands to East and Central Africa) has been critical to uncovering and addressing the Killer in the Kitchen.
