Part of the Yoko Ono Lennon Lunchtime Concert Series

The string quartet Equilibrium was founded in 2018 by cellist Hilary Browning and three colleagues from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, violinists Kate Richardson and Kate Marsden, and violist Rachel Jones, with a view to addressing the gender imbalance in the programming of classical music.

The quartet has explored and performed the works of unjustly neglected women composers and taken enormous enjoyment from discovering many hidden gems. They have performed works by Fanny Mendelssohn, Emelie Meyer, Imogen Holst, Rebecca Clarke, Elizabeth Maconchy, Graznya Bacewicz, Amy Beach, Florence Price and others, as well as celebrating the works of contemporary female composers such as Dobrinka Tabakova, Eleanor Alberga, Grace Evangeline Mason, Dani Howard, Caroline Shaw, Carmel Smickersgill and Bethan Morgan-Williams.

As well as giving concerts, they are quartet in residence for the annual Young Rushworth Composers scheme, where young composers from the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company are given the opportunity to compose a string quartet that is workshopped and performed by professional musicians. Equilibrium is supported by The Women's Organisation.

The programme will present selected movements of works from composers such as Fanny Mendelssohn, Imogen Holst, Elizabeth Maconchy, Amy Beach, Florence Price, Charlotte Sohy and Germaine Tailleferre.
