This week's talks:
Can Beavers Save our Wetlands?
Melanie Baker
Beavers are known as nature's ecosystem engineers - capable of dramatically altering their surroundings in ways that benefit the wider environment. In 2020 with the help of the Cheshire Wildlife Trust, Eurasian beavers were reintroduced back into Cheshire for the first time in over 400 years. They were released into an enclosure on the main inflow to Hatch Mere, an internationally important wetland and designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Unfortunately it is also in poor ecological condition. Over the next three years, we closely monitored water quality, changes in the water table, and vegetation to see whether beavers can help in improving these conditions. But were they successful? You'll have to come along to find out!
Raw Meat, Real Risks: Superbugs and Pet Food
Dr Genever Morgan
Raw meat diets are an increasingly popular pet food choice. However, they can be contaminated with bacteria which have the potential to be dangerous for human and animal health. In this talk we will discuss these bacterial risks, including the latest research from the University of Liverpool. We will talk about the potential risks surrouding superbugs, resistance to antibiotics, and where these diets could play a role in their spread.
