This lecture traces the emergence and reception of this new generation of filmmakers, first providing a critical overview of industrial shifts and media branding before moving on to examine two particularly rich case studies, Elena López Riera’s feature-length El agua and Carla Simón’s short Carta a mi madre para mi hijo, both from the banner year of 2022. It explores how these films demonstrate several preoccupations emblematic of this generation of filmmakers—a focus on intergenerational relationships, a privileging of the environment and the natural world, and a hybrid approach to genre and style—which provide a nuanced, complex portrait of women’s lives, relationships, and histories.
