The increasing use of technology in healthcare allows the self-management of health and wellbeing, improves the patient experience or refines the efficiency and co-ordination of healthcare systems. Examples are the use of self-care apps on smartphones, wearable activity trackers, at home or portable diagnostics, implantable drug delivery devices, or robot-assisted surgery. This sector (known as ‘digital healthcare’, ‘health technology’ or ‘med tech’) plays a key role in the economy.
