LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency and Assessment Framework) is a green initiative developed by University College London (UCL) to improve the sustainability and efficiency of laboratories, technical workspaces including workshops, studios and galleries. LEAF contains actions which lab users can take to save plastics, water, energy and other resources. By taking part in the programme, laboratories and other workspaces can reduce their carbon emissions and create an environment that supports research quality.

Laboratories are awarded either a Bronze, Silver, or Gold level depending on how many sustainability actions they take, and now you can take a tour of the University’s LEAF accredited sustainable laboratories.

The research labs in iC2 were the first to achieve Bronze accreditation in LEAF lab sustainability in 2021. Jenna Lowe is a research technician based in these labs who is currently on secondment as a sustainability technician; to roll our LEAF across the faculty of Health and Life Sciences. Jenna is currently working towards a silver award for the iC2 labs.

Jenna will take you on a tour of these labs and discuss the framework with you showing you how easily you can make you lab practices more sustainable.
