A one-day conference organised by the National Association for Youth Justice (NAYJ) and hosted by the International Criminological Research Unit (ICRU), the University of Liverpool.

Thursday 15th September 2022 – 10:30am - 4:30pm (registration from 09:30am)

For many years, the NAYJ has advocated that youth justice law, policy and practice in England and Wales (and elsewhere) should reflect both the letter and the spirit of international human rights standards. Indeed, the NAYJ manifesto provides that ‘responses to children in trouble should be compliant with, and informed by, international conventions and standards, in particular the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child’ and ‘arrangements for dealing with children in trouble must conform with, and be seen to conform with, principles of equality of treatment’.

By drawing on plenary presentations from leading experts in the field, together with delegate discussion and debate, the conference will assess the progress that has been, and is being made, in implementing the principles of international human rights standards in the youth justice sphere.

The conference will also consider the challenges that policy-makers, managers and practitioners must address to ensure that the youth justice system in England and Wales complies fully with the provisions of international human rights standards.

Finally, the conference will consider visions for a research-informed and human-rights-compliant youth justice and reflect upon the reforms that might be required to realise such vision.

Dedication: The conference is dedicated to the memory of Geoff Monaghan a previous Chair of the NAYJ and a passionate career-long champion for children’s human rights.

Venue: Registration will be open from 09.30 – 10.30 hours on the morning of the conference in the School of Law and Social Justice Building. Refreshments and meeting space for networking will also be available in the same building throughout the day. The conference itself will take place in the Leslie Hearnshaw Lecture Theatre in the Eleanor Rathbone Building (two-minutes walking distance from the School of Law and Social Justice Building).

IMPORTANT NOTE: The closing date for registrations is Friday September 2, 2022. Delegate numbers are limited for this event and places will be allocated on a strict first-come-first-served basis. Early registration is strongly recommended. The registration fees have been deliberately compressed in order to make the conference as accessible as possible. As such, delegates will be required to make their own arrangements for lunch and there are multiple eateries within easy reach of the main conference venue.
