Liverpool Households and Communities Research Group Seminar:

Since 2018, the University of Liverpool, in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University, has been working in the precinct of Mut in Luxor, in search of the New Kingdom settlement which extended south of the precinct of the temple. A series of test trenches carried out at the rear of the precinct in 2006 and 2011 indicated the presence of sustained New Kingdom occupation directly under Later Period installations, which we have started exploring on a large scale.

This lecture will report on the preliminary results from our recent work (2018-2020) and explore the nature of the urban framework of Thebes in the New Kingdom: who were the inhabitants of ‘Thebes'? where did they live? to what extent does the development of the settlement follow a planned strategy focused on the operation of the temples or an organic one reflecting the needs and structure of the local community?
The project ‘Looking for New Kingdom Thebes’ relates the evidence from the Mut Precinct to contemporary settlements and a range of contextual information in order to broaden our understanding of the setting of urban life at Thebes.
