The Visual Language of Art

Thursday & Friday, 11am - 4pm

Start Date

Thursday 24 July & Friday 25 July 2025, 11am - 4pm

Overview

Throughout history, artists have continually searched for new ways of expressing their visual, sensual and emotional responses to the world around them and devised means of communicating concepts or conveying narratives to an audience. The language of art has evolved using lines, colours, shapes and materials in place of words and each artist has their own unique vocabulary and accent.

Over two days, we will explore a range of artists and styles, in two- and three-dimensional artworks, traditional and modern. We will discuss the elements of art and the basic ‘building blocks’ used to create works, along with more complex subjects such as cubism, semiotics and conceptual art. Through slide presentation and informal group discussion, participants will develop the skills to analyse and interpret artworks from a Sienese altarpiece to gallery installations, Victorian narratives to Tracey Emin’s bed.

No experience or prior knowledge of art history is necessary, but participants new to the subject may benefit from looking through some of the resources provided on Canvas beforehand.
