Get ready to meet Jack, a Law student who's not just managing his academic studies but is also juggling part-time jobs, volunteering, advocating for change, and navigating the commuter life. He shares insights into his campus journey, work experience, and the wonderful people he's encountered along the way. We're thrilled to have him share his story with us!

Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm a third-year law student with a passion for advocacy and digital innovation. I balance my academic pursuits on campus with roles as a disability coach, digital coach, and student advocate at my university. Additionally, I contribute as a volunteer journalist for the Borgen Project, focusing on global poverty issues as well as a social media marketing intern for Cogen inc and their sister companies. In my free time, I read comics, play video games, and watch (mostly) horror films.

What's your favourite thing about campus? if you were in charge for a day, any ideas on what you'd change or add?

I love the diverse opportunities for student engagement and inclusivity on campus – especially within the libraries. If I were in charge for a day, I'd focus on enhancing accessibility and digital resources to promote the services available for students with disabilities better.

What is your university experience as a local student?

As a local commuter student coming in almost every day on the train from Southport, I've been able to deeply engage with both the university and the surrounding community which I feel has enriched my overall experience as I`ve spent far more time in town than I usually would, even sitting down, buying food and talking with people sleeping rough around the area. Up until Christmas last year, I regularly kept a man called Moses company as I gave him money when I could, and we talked about life. Through friendships with my fellow digital and disability coaches, I`ve found a lot of bars and cafes throughout the city that I wouldn`t have been aware of otherwise.

Have you found time to do any activities or participate to any events outside of your course?

Yes, my roles as a coach and advocate, along with my work in journalism and social media marketing, have allowed me to participate in a wide range of activities that complement my interests.

Were there any challenges you had to overcome as a student?

Juggling a demanding law curriculum with my various roles and responsibilities has been challenging as I`ve felt burnt out more times than I can count. It is required disciplined time management and a proactive approach to balancing my commitments.

Have you received any support from the university during your studies?

The university has provided excellent support, especially through academic advising, which has been invaluable in guiding my academic and career choices. Additionally, the disability team played a crucial role in my journey. They assisted me in obtaining a student support plan, introduced me to the university's counselling services, and helped me submit my application to the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) through Student Finance England. This support enabled me to access assistive technology and a mental health support worker, which have been essential in managing my studies and overall well-being.

Do you have a dream career or are you still exploring? How and where do you see yourself after graduation?

Post-graduation I`m keen to work within the marketing sector with my main aspirations laying in copywriting ideally. I`d argue this isn`t too dissimilar from my law course as both areas have strong foundations in written English skills, persuasion, psychology, and sociology.

What would be your advice to a student like you starting university now?

Embrace every opportunity to learn and grow, both inside and outside the lecture theatres. University is a unique time to explore your passions and how they can intersect with your academic interests. Stay open to new experiences and be proactive in seeking opportunities that align with your goals.
