Enterprise Story: Frenchie Cup of Tea

Posted on: 15 November 2023 by Richard Finch in Enterprise

I'm Sharon Grothe, currently studying a master's programme in Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Management at the University of Liverpool.

Ever since I got my first job at the age of 15, I knew that I wanted to work for myself. I had several part-time jobs over the years while studying, but I always felt restricted by the lack of freedom and the repetitive nature of the tasks.

So, I yearned for a venture where I could continue learning and utilise my creativity to build something of my own. That is why I launched Frenchie Cup of Tea one year ago, to delve into entrepreneurship and create a platform where I could constantly learn and grow. Initially, Frenchie Cup of Tea was intended to be a blog where my boyfriend and I could share our experiences as French expatriates in Liverpool.

However, after setting up the website, we never got around to writing anything. It remained dormant for several months until my boyfriend suggested selling tea, given that it was already part of the website name. That idea immediately resonated with me, and thus, Frenchie Cup of Tea took shape in September 2022.

Later, through my lecturers, I had the chance to meet Alison Pountney and Lucky Ali, who introduced me to The Enterprise Fund and the Design Your Future program and competition, I have been able to showcase my products through trading on campus, attending and presenting at events and also gaining funding to support the development of my products and promotion.

I am immensely grateful for these opportunities as they allowed me to share my start-up ideas, learn new skills, and challenge myself to present in English in front of a large audience.

Additionally, one of the most exciting and transformative aspects of my journey has been the collaboration with Yamama, a local coffee shop founded by the dynamic duo, Noura and Futoon Qusairy, known for spotlighting local entrepreneurs and artists. Their innovative approach opened me doors for collaboration.

Furthermore, the Enterprise Fund also facilitated my product's exposure at the Red Brick Market, a platform that allowed me to reach a broader audience within Liverpool and develop brand awareness. As I reflect on my entrepreneurial journey, I am deeply grateful for the University of Liverpool and the invaluable opportunities it has afforded me.

The Enterprise Fund and the Design Your Future program have played instrumental roles in shaping my business and allowing me to realise my entrepreneurial aspirations. I am confident that Frenchie Cup of Tea will continue to flourish and provide exceptional, premium organic teas for tea enthusiasts in Liverpool and beyond. I look forward to the exciting road ahead as I continue to build Frenchie Cup of Tea.
