Progress to Postgraduate: Tropical Disease Biology

Helen Elsworth is a 2021 Tropical Disease Biology graduate who is a 2nd Year ScotGEM Student at the University of St Andrews.

How did you get to where you are now?

I undertook an exam in the summer between second and third year before completing a personal statement and UCAS application. After this I completed 2 stages of interviews and achieved the grade requirements set out by the university.

Your favourite experience on your course?

Having the opportunity to use skills from my degree and have patient contact from the first week of my course.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Balancing applications and third year exams as well as working to obtain a certain grade. And moving further from home!

Top three tips for other students and graduates?

  1. Start thinking about what you might want to do in second year as some deadlines are in September/October
  2. Do not panic there are so many opportunities!
  3. Take any opportunity to build employability skills
