Progressing to postgrad: Studying for the SQE

Eve Hughes is a Class of 2022 LLB graduate, currently studying for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE).

While at university I applied for a number of vacation schemes at commercial law firms and was offered a training contract with Addleshaw Goddard.

Before starting in September 2024, I am studying for the SQE examinations with BPP University, sponsored by my firm.

Alongside my studies I worked part-time in hospitality and participated in various activities at university, such as the cheerleading club. I believe this gave me something unique to talk about in my application process, and transferable skills that will be useful throughout my career.

Moving to Manchester ahead of starting my SQE studies was something I wouldn’t have been able to do without having secured a training contract and SQE sponsorship.

It has been really interesting progressing from an undergraduate Law degree to the SQE. Whilst my degree has given me a foundation in legal knowledge, my current course is much more practical.

My advice to current students:

1) Keep hold of your notes from your undergraduate degree, I have referred back to notes from first year as part of my revision process.

2) Get involved in wider university life, whether that be sports clubs or societies, and consider going for committee positions. These can give you great transferable skills and a unique selling point in interviews.

3) Keep in touch with friends and lecturers from university, as your network may be able to introduce you to contacts and job opportunities.
