Class of 2021 Human Physiology graduate, Katie Allen talks more about her journey into further study at Hull York Medical School.

What are you currently doing since graduating?

I'm a Physician Associate Student at Hull York Medical School.

How did you hear about the role?

Careers fair.

How did you get to where you are now?

After completing a degree in human physiology, I was originally going to have a year away from education to improve communication skills which I felt I was lacking after the pandemic. However, I then came across the physician associate course at HYMS and decided to apply. I completed all the stages of the application process and received an offer to study in Hull from September 2021. I have now completed one year of the course and I couldn’t be happier with how far I’ve come and I am thoroughly enjoying the course.

What is your favourite experience as part of your role?

Throughout my year, I have had many experiences which have been interesting in their own ways. For example, during university hours I have been able to learn about processes and diseases which have always fascinated me from dementia to the common cold. I also have experiences from placement which have also taught be valuable lessons such as knowing when an individual may need space or when they need someone to talk to. I have also learnt many skills useful for my future career such as cannula insertion and venepuncture.

What was the most challenging part of your graduate journey?

I have found financing the course has been significantly harder than it was at undergraduate as masters students receive enough loan for 1 year of studies but my course is 2 years. To get round this, I now have a part-time job.

What are your top three tips for other students?

1. Don’t be afraid to meet new people or do new things.

2. Always ask if there’s something you need help with. Tutors and peers are always happy to help!

3. Make sure to save some time for yourself.
