International Graduate Story: Sarang

Sarang Jayaraj is a 2023 graduate from our MSc Economics programme who is now working as an Economist Intern at Fjordstans.

How did you hear about your current role and why or how did you decide to apply for it?        

I discovered Fjordstans through a colleague who mentioned its unique blend of start-up innovation within a larger German company. What truly captivated me was the prospect of gaining hands-on experience in economics while also immersing myself in coding, analytics, probability, and macroeconomics – a perfect synergy for my hybrid interests.

What sealed the deal for me was the flexibility Fjordstans offered. It wasn't just about the job; it was about fostering an environment where I could pursue my eclectic passions alongside my professional growth. Whether it was managing my stock market trades, running a quirky fruit salad stand adorned with haikus, or pouring my heart into poetry writing, Fjordstans provided the canvas for me to paint my entrepreneurial dreams.

From there, I found myself seamlessly integrating my side hustles with my professional endeavours, creating a harmonious balance that fuelled both my personal and career growth. Whether it was navigating the complexities of the stock market, crafting unique fruit salad recipes paired with whimsical haikus, or immersing myself in the world of poetry, each venture enriched my journey and contributed to my overall fulfilment.

As I reflect on my journey, I find myself immersed in a diverse tapestry of endeavours – from contributing to innovative projects at a start-up, to penning the pages of a new book, and collaborating with captivating associations and projects. This dynamic blend of experiences has not only enriched my professional path but has also ignited my passion for exploration and creativity.

With each new project and collaboration, I discover fresh avenues for growth and inspiration, fuelling my drive to make a meaningful impact in both my professional and personal spheres. As I continue to navigate this vibrant landscape of opportunities, I eagerly anticipate the adventures that lie ahead, ready to embrace the unknown with curiosity, enthusiasm, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.


How did you get to where you are now?

My journey to where I stand today has been an intricate tapestry woven with strategic choices, fortuitous encounters, unwavering encouragement, and a relentless drive for personal and professional advancement.

The path that led me to my current role was a blend of serendipity and intentionality. Upon learning about the unique fusion of start-up dynamism and corporate stability at Fjordstans from a colleague, I felt an instant connection. The opportunity to delve into economics while immersing myself in coding, analytics, probability, and macroeconomics resonated deeply with my diverse interests. It was the perfect platform to nurture both my professional growth and my eclectic passions, from managing stock market trades to infusing whimsy into my fruit salad stall with haikus.

Furthermore, my academic voyage, from earning a BA.CPE in Communicative English, Political Science, and Economics at St. Joseph's College to pursuing an MSc in Economics at the esteemed University of Liverpool, has provided me with a robust foundation and advanced expertise in economic principles and analytical prowess. These educational milestones, combined with my fervent passion for economics and diverse skill set, have positioned me as a valuable asset for projects requiring strategic insight and effective communication.

Throughout this journey, the unwavering support of cherished individuals has been my guiding light. From the steadfast encouragement of my parents and grandparents to the profound influence of friends like Kuldeep Singh Naga, their belief in my potential has propelled me forward, even in the face of adversity. I hold in my heart the memory of my beloved grandmother; whose spirit continues to inspire me as I navigate the myriad projects and challenges that come my way.

Additionally, the invaluable mentorship of colleagues like Professor Ian Burn has been instrumental in shaping my professional trajectory, providing guidance and wisdom that have enriched my journey.

My time in Liverpool was not only marked by academic pursuits but also by active engagement in the vibrant cultural and social scene of the city. From participating in community events and volunteering initiatives to networking with industry professionals and attending workshops and conferences, I embraced every opportunity to immerse myself fully in the dynamic atmosphere of Liverpool. These experiences not only broadened my horizons but also enriched my understanding of diverse perspectives and fostered meaningful connections that continue to influence my journey.

Ultimately, my unwavering motivation stems from a deep-seated desire to make a meaningful impact and pursue my passions to the fullest. Your favourite experience as a Liverpool student?       

One standout experience that resonates deeply with me is the culmination of my academic journey at the University of Liverpool. As I delved into advanced economic concepts such as econometrics and game theory, I found myself continually challenged and invigorated by the depth of knowledge and the intellectual exchanges within the academic community.

Beyond the classroom, I had the privilege of participating in captivating discussions and debates, where diverse perspectives intersected to illuminate complex economic phenomena. These moments of intellectual exchange not only broadened my understanding of economic theory but also sharpened my critical thinking skills and instilled in me a lifelong appreciation for learning.

One particularly memorable occasion was when I had the opportunity to present my research findings at a prestigious academic conference. It was a moment of validation and pride, as I shared my insights with esteemed scholars and peers from around the world. The experience not only showcased the culmination of my academic endeavours but also fuelled my passion for contributing to the advancement of knowledge in my field.

What has been the most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Amidst the rigorous demands of pursuing one of the most intellectually challenging courses, the journey through my graduate studies was marked by a delicate balance between academic excellence and personal well-being. Navigating this intricate equilibrium became the most formidable aspect of my academic odyssey.

The intensity of coursework, coupled with the relentless pursuit of academic distinction, constantly tested the bounds of my resilience and time management prowess. From the depths of econometrics to the complexities of game theory, each intellectual challenge pushed me beyond my comfort zone, demanding unwavering focus and dedication.

Balancing the demands of coursework, research endeavours, and extracurricular pursuits while striving for a semblance of work-life harmony became a relentless juggling act. The competitive ethos of academia, coupled with the innate desire to distinguish oneself among peers, often fuelled bouts of self-doubt and imposter syndrome. Yet, in the crucible of adversity, I discovered reservoirs of resilience, perseverance, and self-reflection that propelled me forward.

Despite the arduous journey, the crucible of graduate studies served as a crucible for personal growth and development. Each challenge confronted, each obstacle overcome, forged an indomitable spirit, equipped with invaluable skills and experiences. Today, as I reflect on the transformative journey, I stand as a testament to the resilience and fortitude forged in the fires of academic rigor, ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead with renewed strength and determination.


What are your top 3 tips for current students and graduates?

  1. Embrace Adaptability: In our dynamic world, adaptability stands as a cornerstone of success. It's about welcoming change, being open to new paths, even if they diverge from your initial plans. Flexibility empowers you to navigate the shifting landscapes of academia and the professional realm with unwavering confidence and resilience. Reflecting on my journey at the University of Liverpool, I encountered diverse challenges and opportunities that underscored the importance of adaptability. From adjusting to new research methodologies to seizing unexpected collaborations, embracing adaptability became a guiding principle in overcoming obstacles and embracing growth.
