International Graduate Story: Parth

Parth Khandelwal is a MSc Advanced Computer Science Class of 2022 graduate who now works as a Graduate Software Developer at Barclays Bank UK.

Can you tell us more about your current role and describe a typical day in your role?

As a Graduate Software Developer at Barclays Bank PLC, I start my day by reviewing my tasks for the day and participating in team meetings. Then I focus on coding new features, troubleshooting and debugging. I work in a collaborative and innovative environment where engaging with other team members is essential. There are tons of continuous learning and development opportunities which include attending training sessions and receiving mentorship. Apart from reviewing codes, solving problems and cross-functional collaboration, I reflect on my day’s achievements and plan my tasks for the next day. Overall, the role is intellectually stimulating where I get to contribute to cutting-edge software solutions in the banking industry.


What do you like the most about your current role?

I find my role fulfilling as I get the opportunity to work on meaningful projects which have a tangible impact on the baking industry. I appreciate the collaborative environment where I get to learn from experienced colleagues and the chance to enhance my skills. This type of supportive and inclusive culture creates a positive work environment. Moreover, the challenge of coding new features and solving problems bring enjoyment. Overall, the opportunity to contribute to impactful projects, collaborate with talented individuals, and grow professionally are highly valued. 


What do you find challenging about your current role?

I sometimes face challenges such as complex projects, tight deadlines, collaboration and communication, keeping up with technological advancements, problem-solving, and adapting to change. However, these challenges also provide opportunities for growth and skill development. Barclays offers a supportive environment with experienced professionals, mentors, and training resources to help you overcome these challenges and succeed in your role.


How did you go about finding this job opportunity? Do you have any advice for current (international) students on how to look for roles of interest?

I took proactive steps such as conducting research, networking, seeking internships, utilizing online job portals and company websites, engaging with university’s career service, building a professional online presence, and leveraging referrals and recommendations.

I would encourage current international students to be proactive, persistent, adaptable, and to continuously develop their skills and knowledge in software development.


What did the recruitment and selection process involve and how did you prepare for it?

The recruitment and selection process for a Graduate Software Developer role at Barclays typically includes application screening, followed by aptitude and technical assessments, interviews, and potentially an assessment centre. To prepare, I tailored my CV to highlight relevant skills and experiences, practiced aptitude tests and coding challenges, researched the common technical interview questions, reviewed my past projects, and developed strong communication and problem-solving skills. Staying updated on industry trends and demonstrating enthusiasm and genuine interest throughout the process is also helpful.


What made you choose the UK as a graduate job destination?

The decision to work in the UK as a Graduate Software Developer was motivated by various factors: abundance of opportunities and growth in the tech industry, the networking and industry connections available, the cultural appeal and lifestyle opportunities, the desire for international exposure and a global perspective, the stability of the UK economy and competitive salaries, as well as personal reasons and preferences.
