Posted on: 27 June 2023 by Aditi Gupta in Graduate stories

Nupur Gupta, who graduated in 2021 with an MSc in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence shares more about her graduate role experience of working as a Research Data Analyst at Pierian Bioscience.

Can you tell us more about your current role and describe a typical day in your role?

I work as a Research Data Analyst at Pierian Bioscience. I work with a team of scientists and research associates who are conducting an Algorithm Development Study using sophisticated high throughput imaging systems, spectral flow cytometry, solid tumour dissociation and tumour enrichment automation, and automated liquid handlers.

What do you like the most about your current role?

In my current role, I like how I can use my experience of research and data science to help make a direct impact for oncology treatment.

What do you find challenging about your current role?

My role and responsibilities involve handling laboratory processes. I was out of touch for the last 2.5 years and coming back to this practice was bit challenging for me.

How did you go about finding this job opportunity? Do you have any advice for current (international) students on how to look for roles of interest?

I found my current job through LinkedIn and my connections. I would advise other students to reach out to as many people as possible and build connections during studies to make the process easier.

What did the recruitment and selection process involve and how did you prepare for it?

There were several steps in the recruitment and selection process. The first step involved submitting an up to date CV and cover letter. I also prepared for aptitude tests and I knew it tends to be the initial steps in the selection process for most jobs. I also made sure that I practiced a lot for the final interview to finally land this job role.

What made you choose the UK as a graduate job destination?

I really liked the work culture in the UK which is why I chose to work in the UK after graduation. Particularly, I like to emphasis on work-life balance in the working culture here.

What differences have you noticed between the UK job market and the job market of your home country?

There are a lot of differences that I can point out but the one that stands out the most is how, in the UK job market, employers prefer to give opportunities to recent graduates, even if they do not possess much work experience. This is quite uncommon in my home country and a big difference I noticed in the two job markets.

What challenges did you face as an international student/graduate in your career journey?

I think one of the challenges that I faced in my initial days was to understand the accent of the English language here. However, with the help of my friends at the university I was able to get better in time.

In your opinion, what steps can current international students take for enhancing their employability and preparing themselves better for the graduate job market?

In my opinion, it is important for international students to do market research for their respective domain and learn the skills that are in high demand.

What advice would you offer to current international students who are looking to enter the job market?

I will advise current international students to make connections as much as you can and do market research properly and learn relevant skills as much as you can.
