Abhilash Kulkarni is a 2022 graduate who studied an MSc in Business Analytics and Big Data, now working as a Junior Business Analyst at Capita PLC Group. In this piece, Abhilash highlights the importance of getting out of one’s comfort zone to adapt to a new culture and maintaining a stress-free state of mental health.

How did you hear about your opportunity?

I applied for jobs through every job-seeking website that I knew or heard of from my friends. After a lot of frustration and disappointments, I started applying for jobs listed on LinkedIn. I had applied previously to the same company but was rejected as I was not in the UK for the past 3 years. However, I applied again when I came across the ‘Junior Business Analyst’ role on the company’s page on LinkedIn. I read the job description carefully and thought this is what interests me and I proceeded with the application process.

How did you get to where you are now?

After completing my master's degree, I started looking for a job in my desired career which is to be a Business Analyst. I began my job-hunting process and it took me a while to understand how the hiring process works, I faced a lot of rejections and disappointing moments. Still, I never stopped working hard toward my goal of becoming a Business Analyst. I also had the constant support and motivation from my family and friends that really helped me to keep pushing myself to the limits and get to where I am right now.

What is your favourite experience as part of your role?

I have had the privilege to join one of the most successful companies, as a junior business analyst, my most memorable experience in this journey was when I visited the head office to meet the seniors and all my colleagues, which was a great experience compared to everyday work from home job. I got to learn a lot from them and share our experiences. However, I'm still learning and growing, which I enjoy!

What was the most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The most challenging part of the graduation journey was definitely moving away from my home country (India), it was a big challenge coming out of my comfort zone and adapting to a new culture, and making new friends. During the graduate journey adapting to a new form of education pattern took me a while to get used to.

What are your top 3 tips for current students and graduates?

  1. Keep working hard and never give up, things take time to happen but they surely will. Also, don’t hesitate to ask questions. Interact with as many people as you can, this will help you gather information, clarify your doubts and build long-lasting friendships and relationships.
  2. Never work under stress, this will cause damage to your mental health as well as the work you are on. Or if facing a stressful situation, pause for a while, de-stress (maybe go for a walk, watch a movie, hang out with friends, etc.), clear your mind and then continue.
  3. Work on developing professional and interpersonal skills, indulge in an existing hobby, or develop a new one.
