Abby Warner is a BA English Language & French graduate who now works as a Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages for the Department for Education/Liverpool John Moores University.

How did you get to where you are now?

Having a career in teaching has been my goal since I was 14 years old. After graduating from the University of Liverpool, I successfully completed my Secondary Modern Foreign Languages PGDE with QTS at Liverpool John Moores University. I started searching for vacancies very early on and secured a position as an MFL teacher at a fantastic secondary school which offers three languages. I am now completing my first year as an Early Career Teacher alongside undertaking an MA in Education Practice at LJMU.

What has been your best experience as part of your role?

There are so many things that I could write for this, however I think something that always makes me smile is when my classroom is bursting with enthusiasm and happiness! It is so encouraging when I see pupils genuinely enjoying my lessons and growing in confidence when they're using French.

What has been the most challenging part of your graduate journey?

I think I struggled with my work/life balance when I was training. I absolutely loved the course and enjoyed completing the assignments alongside placement however when I look back I didn't really give myself a break! Now that I'm qualified, I make sure that I use my PPA time well and limit how much work I do at home.

What are your top tips for other students and graduates?

  • Be kind to yourself.
  • Be organised.
  • Set aside time to do things you enjoy doing.
