Posted on: 21 October 2021 by Richard Finch in Graduate stories

Sourav Das is a 2021 graduate from the MSc Business Analytics and Big Data programme at the University of Liverpool, now working as a Software Engineer at Lusis Payments, Paris.

Can you describe your role?

My current role is of a Software Engineer at Lusis Payments which is a payments solution company headquartered in Paris. My role is kind of technical where I work on databases and programming languages along with some non-technical aspects of client handling and designing wireframes for secure payment solutions.

The range of customers is vast and the requirements also vary, so there is a lot of communication involved across several time zones but with the convenience of working from homes through the company-provided laptops. This makes the work challenging and gratifying at the same time!

How did you find out about the opportunity?

Since the very first day, the University made it very easy to access the necessary resources along with the provision of expert advices through the Careers & Employability services. The number of insightful events stacking up on the Handshake calendar is beyond commendable and it also provides the opportunity for the students to avail the industry exposure.

Coming from a foreign country when I was struggling with setting up a proper resume, I decided to take some inputs from the ‘CV 360’ online portal which turned out to be extremely fruitful as I got this job from Handshake in a month following the useful advices. The role not only suited my needs but also my career aspirations and its all thanks to Handshake and the Careers team at the university.

Do you have any top tips to share with future and current students about how you got hired and how this opportunity has benefited you from an employability perspective?

The most important part is to keep tabs on the job postings. I would definitely recommend setting up alerts or scheduled mails from favourited recruiters through Handshake. It is because reaching out to the recruiter on the top of queue of fellow applicants makes a lot more sense. It is very important to reach out to them and message them if a particular role seems suitable.

I would advice setting up a proper updated account on LinkedIn as well where it is easy to connect to the recruiters. It is massively important to be in touch with the latest job opening adverts. Furthermore, I would definitely suggest to rectify the CV by taking guidance from the Careers Studio team if you are not getting enough responses from the recruiters in a job hunt that is taking longer than a month.
