Liverpool Graduate

Jack Holland is a Class of 2022 BSc Marine Biology graduate, now working as a Recruitment Consultant for Henderson Scott.

I first learnt about the recruitment industry during my final year of study and I realised that this was the perfect sector for someone like myself.

I knew I wanted to work hard and control my own earning potential, and I found out that recruitment could offer this and it really appealed to me.

I didn't want to work in an industry that would take decades to climb the ladder, and recruitment offers the chance to progress more quickly based on my own hard work.

The most challenging part is resilience. This was understanding that everything will not always go to plan. You need to be resilient in whatever you do after graduation, and to remember that this is only the start of your journey. Most successful individuals started where I currently am.

My three tips for students at The University of Liverpool:

1. Understand what your long-term goals are and what industry/role can help you achieve this

2. "Rome was not built in a day" - I think understanding that you're at the start of your journey is very important. Enjoy the journey because this is sometimes better than the destination. I think there is a lot of pressure on young people currently to start businesses, become rich and famous etc. However, there is plenty of time left to achieve your goals, so do not feel pressured to rush.

3. If you want to stray away from your degree after graduation, then do not be afraid. There are plenty of people who are working in careers that are completely different to their degree.
