University of Liverpool Graduate

Laura Foley is a Class of 2022 BA English Literature graduate, now working as the North West Programme Co-ordinator for Action Tutoring.

I was asked to apply for the role as the North West programme coordinator after I volunteered with the charity during my final year at the University of Liverpool.

As part of the final year of my degree I completed a placement module (SOTA300). I was placed with Action Tutoring as a volunteer tutor for disadvantaged young people, and a job opportunity came up when I was nearing the end of my placement.

I had really enjoying working with young people in the charity sector, and my placement mentee from Action Tutoring suggested that I should apply for the role. I submitted my application and here I am!

In this role, I love being able to make a positive impact on the young people's academic progress, and working with such a variety of people is inspiring and motivating.

The adjustment from working part-time and studying to a full-time graduate role was quite challenging at first, but it only took a short time to adapt to my new life.

Here are my top three tips for current students:

1. Do what you love and what you're passionate about - it makes every day worth the hard work.

2. Push yourself out of your comfort zone!

3. Believe in yourself. Imposter syndrome is so common in young people entering the working world but I promise, you can do it!"
