I Got Hired: Healthcare Paralegal

Lily Emmett is a class of 2021 Law graduate, now working as a Healthcare Paralegal at Weightmans LLP.

How did you get to where you are now?

I had applied for lots of law firms. Had previously had an interview at a firm in Liverpool for a Real Estate paralegal role but I turned it down as the salary was too low to be able to afford to live away from home and be able to save etc (it sounds ungrateful but don’t be afraid to know your worth!). I am so glad I stuck this out as I love the role I am in and have met so many great people so far.

What has been your best experience as part of your role?

The hands on application of all the skills (both legal and personal) I developed at university. I work within the healthcare team working on the defence side of NHS clinical claim cases. I’ve already learnt so much by liaising with other solicitors, experts, NHS Resolution and various Trusts across the country. I believe this job will really prep me well for my future goal of being a solicitor!

What has been the most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Not hearing back from employers following lots of applications. It felt disheartening and often made me wonder whether all my hard work was worth it. However, really important to not be disheartened and remember lots of employers are just too busy to give feedback!

What are your top tips for other students and graduates?

  1. Use LinkedIn to network with potential employers and employees. I was able to do this to speak with employees at Weightmans to know the job was what I really wanted!
  2. When applying for jobs - use excel or something similar to keep track of where you’ve applied / how you applied and feedback you received etc. makes it easier to know where you have applied. Also when applying - be yourself. Employers like to see personality and characteristics.
  3. Don’t be disheartened by rejections - remember we all have unique qualities and employers will see this. Just be resilient. If you haven’t heard back from a job then it’s likely because something better is waiting for you. Rejection can be good, it makes you more resilient and gives you more experience with job application processes
