I Got Hired: Graduate Air Quality Consultant

Georgia Donner is a BSc Geography graduate now working at Delta-Simons Environmental Consultants as a Graduate Air Quality Consultant.

How did you get to where you are now?

I first heard about the role through my friend, who works within the Environmental Planning team at Delta-Simons. She informed me of an opportunity within the Air Quality team, so I sent my CV to the manager and then went through the interview process. I had an interview with the senior members of the Air Quality team where I was asked questions around what modules I had taken at uni and how these were relevant to the job. We also spoke about my interest in air quality and other environmental aspects that are impacting populations and environments around the world. In the last week, I have celebrated my first year at the company and so far it has been great!

What has been your best experience as part of your role?

Within this role we have the chance to visit project sites. I have been on a few site visits over the last year which have been really educational. Its interesting to see first hand how air quality is monitored, and where the datasets I use daily initially come from. The projects we deal with vary in type, size and location, all across the UK so there’s always something different and challenging about each site!

What has been the most challenging part of your graduate journey?

I never thought I would go for a role that meant I was hybrid working (a share between home and the office). It has come with its own challenges, and is completely different to working on uni essays and projects at home. It has taken some getting used to, but provides a lot of flexibility which is great!

What are your top tips for other students and graduates?

1. Make the most of societies, I joined cheerleading in my second year and wish I had done it sooner. It was such a great way to make friends and also learn something new!

2. Make the most of living in such an amazing city. Liverpool is such an incredible place to live and study, there’s so many places I wish I had visited when I was living there but never did!

3. Don’t be so hard on yourself post-graduation. We all think that everyone else has it all figured out, but that’s not true. It’s easy to compare yourself to others but let yourself take some time to figure out what it is you want to do next.
