Posted on: 25 November 2019 in Student experiences

Nicole Head is a BA Marketing student, currently undertaking a placement year as a Digital Marketing Intern with Enterprise Rent-a-Car.

We've asked her to tell us what she's been doing so far on her placement year and how her time at university has prepared her for the role. She also offers some advice to students thinking about a year in industry placement, and some of her favourite experiences while at university.

What has been your best experience while studying your course at the University of Liverpool?

It is difficult to pin point my best experience while studying Marketing at the University of Liverpool. However, I think all of the group projects that I have been a part of at University have helped better my skills and social network with people on my course. Due to the students at University of Liverpool being so diverse, you have the opportunity to work with and socialise with a wide range of people, making group projects more engaging and interesting. Outside of my course, I would have to say that the Ski Trip to Val D'Isere was the best experience and opportunity that I had while in my second year at University. Not only did I have the chance to ski with many other students, it also allowed me to get closer with people on my course and other courses, who I would now deem to be some of my closest friends!

Which aspects of your course do you think have been the most beneficial to your career development?

Due to Marketing having so many different modules, it allows students to get a better understanding of business in general, rather than just the marketing elements of business. Through studying modules such as economics, business ethics and market research, it enables students to take these skills into the workplace and have a more comprehensive understanding of the functionalities of a business.

Can you please share an insight into your current role and if this was supported by your time at the University of Liverpool?

I am currently working at the Headquarters of Enterprise Rent-A-Car as their new Digital Marketing intern. On a day to day basis I complete a variety of tasks. Currently I am working on an Instagram campaign, designing new brochures and also responding to customer emails and queries. Through my studies at the University of Liverpool, I believe it has enabled me to gain confidence to propose my creative and business ideas at work, making a difference to certain projects that I am working on. As well as this, through being pushed out of my comfort zone at University, I found it easy to settle into my placement role and adapt to my new environment.

Do you have any top tips to share with future and current students?

Make the most of being at University and enjoy it! The time really does fly by, so make the most of any opportunities that come your way and push yourself out of your comfort zone! Try and involve yourself as much as you can in lectures/group projects as this is the best way to network with your course mates. As well as this, if you do apply for a year in industry, make sure to start researching and applying as early as possible- it will make your second year at university a lot less stressful, especially with all of the deadlines that come around a lot quicker than you expect!

What is the first thing that you think of when you think of the University of Liverpool?

Change and opportunity. Going to the University of Liverpool has definitely been the best thing I have ever done! I have developed so much as an individual and I wouldn't change anything about my experience at Uni. Through studying my course, going on university trips and networking with a variety of people outside of my course, I have made friends and memories that will stay with me for life. I feel a lot more independent, confident and knowledgeable after studying at University of Liverpool for two years and I look forward to completing my final year after my placement year!
