I Got Hired: Community Employment Specialist

Posted on: 1 February 2023 by Samantha Riella in Graduate stories

Josh Dally is a class of 2021 BA Politics graduate, now working as a Community Employment Specialist at Merseyside Expanding Horizons.

How did you get to where you are now?

After graduating, I spent a year at home in Knutsford, Cheshire, where I took up work experience at the Knutsford Town Council. Learning many skills and building friendships, I then returned to the city I love, Liverpool, to pursue a career in charity, with the desire to make positive change in the community.

What has been your best experience as part of your role?

My favourite experience has been seeing people taking on economic independence through moving into employment, particularly when clients are so low on confidence when they first see me.

What has been the most challenging part of your graduate journey?

I have found getting multiple rejections during the job-hunting experience particularly challenging as it lowers your confidence.

What are your top tips for other students and graduates?

My top three tips would be to get stuck into work experience, to have an effective and attainable structure to your days, and to build connections.
