Olivia Wilson is a Class of 2021 English Literature graduate, now working as a secondary school English teacher.

How did you hear about the role?

I completed a PGCE at Nottingham Trent University (Secondary English, School Direct) straight after finishing my undergraduate degree in English Literature. I then began to apply for teaching jobs that I found on TES/ school websites or heard about.

How did you get to where you are now?

I completed a PGCE (Secondary English, School Direct) and then applied for jobs as a secondary school English teacher.

What has been your favourite experience as part of your role?

My favourite experience as part of my role is being able to work with people, learn from experienced colleagues and help students to succeed. It has also been great to spread my passion for English and find a vocation in the subject I studied at degree level.

What was the most challenging part of your graduate journey?

I had to dedicate a lot of time to completing my PGCE, as the School Direct route into teaching means you spend the majority of time in a school but also have long essays to complete for university at the same time.

Finally, what are your top three tips for other students?

  1. Take a risk, try something even if you aren’t 100% sure if it is for you.
  2. Be resilient and persevere when applying for jobs, something might not turn up straight away.
  3. Believe in yourself and your potential!
