Siemens CareerTrek

In March 2022 students took part in a CareerTrek, a brand new partnership between Siemens and Employer Connections at Liverpool.

We first brought CareerTreks to Liverpool in February 2020 with a tour of three organisations in the heart of Liverpool. Since then, we have been navigating our way through the pandemic with a switch to virtual events and whilst they definitely have their benefits, we have been eager to bring back physical events for our students as it can be so difficult for organic connections to take place in a virtual world. Just over two years on from our first CareerTrek, we have worked together in collaboration with the current interns and graduates at Siemens to host the very first post-pandemic trek.

CareerTreks are beneficial for students as it enables students to experience what the company’s environment, atmosphere and culture is like internally, and decide whether it is the right fit for them. It’s also useful for employers to see whether the brand is appealing to young professionals, and what students expect from employers when applying for jobs since recruitment is a two-way process.

Taking place on 30th March 2022, Siemens provided a small, targeted group of 10 University of Liverpool students with an exclusive opportunity to get a first-hand insight into what  it’s really like to work at Siemens as a student or graduate. Students in attendance completed a short application to ensure that they were fully engaged in the trek. The final group were from various years of study and degree disciplines ranging from psychology to aerospace engineering reflecting the fact that opportunities were available to all students regardless of what they were studying.

The afternoon had a packed agenda to enable students to fully immerse themselves in the organisation. Highlights included, a quiz on sustainability, inspiring talks from senior staff on their own career journeys and what development opportunities you can expect as a student or graduate at Siemens, a tour of their brand new, innovative technology space and recently refurbished offices, a recruitment hints & tips workshop plus the chance to chat with their interns and graduates over pizza to gain an insight into what their roles actually involve on a day to day basis.

Unique events like this provide so many benefits to both students and employers. The CareerTrek really brought Siemens to life for our students and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience as they were able to get a first-hand insight into life as an early careers professional at Siemens and make deeper connections with the current interns and graduates.

I found it to be an amazing experience, it was very insightful and good to hear what graduates thought. I would definitely recommend attending a CareerTrek to other students, even if it is a company they know very little about.

The CareerTrek to Siemens was managed by their current interns and graduates as a collaborative project for their own development. This is a brilliant way for employers to ease pressure on their busy Graduate Recruitment Teams whilst also improving the quality of applications from a targeted group of students a meet D&I targets. It also provides a great opportunity to provide a face to face experience that holds real value which students will return to campus and talk about with their peers, ultimately raising the profile of your organisation even further.

This was a brand new partnership between Siemens and Employer Connections at Liverpool, and working together on a CareerTrek, which can be so beneficial to our students, was a great way to kick off a new partnership that we will continue into the new academic year.

The support we received from the university, in particular Jade McGee within the careers department, was incredibly useful and we are all immensely grateful for.

Experiences like these are needed now more than ever as we come out of the pandemic and we hope to further expand our CareerTreks in 2022-23. If you’d like to open up your organisation to our students and provide them with an exclusive chance to learn about your opportunities and company culture, please contact employerconnections@liverpool.ac.uk to find out more.
