I am in my first year of the DTP, based in Manchester at the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (CAS), where I am focusing on the formation of ice in mixed phase clouds. I graduated from the University of Manchester, with a Masters in Mathematics and Physics in the summer. During my final year project I investigated the feasibility to produce an automated system to classify ice crystal images collected using a cloud particle imager, and it was here where my interest and my desire to understand more about the Earth’s Atmosphere began.
Through my undergraduate project and courses, I became more aware of the world leading research carried out by CAS here in Manchester, and the type of research I could get involved with. I was also made aware of the opportunity to be involved in the second DTP cohort, beginning in September 2015.
The DTP is giving me the opportunity to advance the broad area of knowledge in maths and physics that I developed while studying my undergraduate and apply it to the area of cloud microphysics. Training is a very important aspect of the programme and something that was of particular interest to me. I have attended a number of programming courses to help me develop my programming skills and I am looking forward to attending the NCAS Introduction to Atmospheric Science course in late November.
I feel very fortunate to be a part of the DTP not only for the great opportunities that it has already given me, but also because the support network that the programme provides.
